Building adventure into your daily life

Reader Submission: Flight Over the Adirondacks

These photos come from a long time reader, friend of the site, and previous content submitter. This was a day long flight around the Adirondacks in a plane that they own. If you are interested in experiencing something similar there are several local services that provide airplane tours (see links below). The flight started from Malone NY. It was going to be an all day flight, about 10hrs. We left Malone...

Happiness Is A New Wood Stove

This is pretty much the mother of all “Happiness Is” posts. Currently, I’m sitting in my new favorite chair next to our new wood stove, drinking coffee and looking out the window as the snow lazily drifts about. Can you say COZY? I thought so. It only took a little bit of convincing on my part before Dave agreed that our first major house purchase should be a wood stove. Although this winter...

So Much For My Chair, Part 2

He’s been making himself quite comfortable the last couple of days and I don’t have the heart to move him. Good thing we also have a comfy couch.

Video: Guns in National Parks Parody

Solitude, quiet, beauty… Smith and Wesson. This hasn’t received nearly as much coverage as I thought it would, but a new law permitting firearms in our National Parks went into affect recently. It was part of – get this – a bill that imposes new restrictions on credit card companies. Guns, National Parks… Credit Cards. This sure is an interesting country, isn’t it? Well,...

Snowed In

Finally! This storm delivered. I’m not sure what the total accumulation for the day was, but I do know that our driveway was plowed at 6:30am and when I rolled out of bed a few hours later there was already another 4 or 5 inches of coverage. It came down steadily all day and is just now letting up. Tomorrow is supposed to be another doozy with more snow – and wind – on the way. Hopefully...

A Storm’s A Brewin’

Last night on our way out the door to dinner we looked up at the moon and noticed something we’d never seen before – a halo. A big, huge ring around the moon. “Google it!” I immediately exclaimed. A minute later, we learned that the halo effect is caused by light refracting through ice crystals formed in high-level cirrus clouds. It’s believed to signify that bad weather is...

Quote of the Week – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Adopt the pace of nature: her secret is patience. ~Ralph Waldo Emerson Ralph Waldo Emerson, 1803-1882

Happy Birthday, Dave!

I love you and all of our adventures. I couldn’t ask for a better partner in life. I don’t care that you’re old.

All In A Day’s Work

We got our first load of firewood delivered today. This is exciting because it means that we will soon be getting our wood stove installed. So, in anticipation of what I expect to be one of the happiest days of my life, we got a load of wood delivered. How much is in a load? A lot. To be technical, the firewood man told me it was about 5 face cords.

Why I Like Shaun White

I’m not a big fan of snowboarding. Frankly, I find the whole snowboarding culture pretty obnoxious. It reminds me of surf culture (which I’m totally OK with) on steroids. But I DO like Shaun White, and it’s not just because he’s from my real hometown of lovely Carlsbad, California.
