2 Climbers Fall to their Deaths on Mount McKinley
Two experienced climbers fell to their death while attempting Mount McKinley’s West Rib Route on May 30. Not much is known about the accident at this point, but what is known is that the climbers who fell were very experienced and known for safety.
In 2000 both men were awarded the Denali Pro Award, which is an award that recognizes climbers for high standards for safety, self-sufficiency, Leave No Trace ethics, and assisting fellow mountaineers.
Death is a reality in mountaineering, especially on a mountain of McKinley’s size and temperament – but it is still sad and shocking when you hear about the deaths of people who are so experienced and committed to their fellow climbers.
John Mislow was 39 and a neurosurgeon in Boston MA. He leaves behind a wife and children.
Andrew Swanson was 36 and was an orthopedic surgeon out of Mankato, Minnesota.
