Going Skiing!
We are going downhill skiing! This should be an adventure. Neither of us have been on the slopes since high school, which, despite us posting photos of ourselves that make us look young, was a very long time ago.
There is no shortage of mountains around here, but we were shocked at how expensive the lift tickets are at the “big boys.” Has it always been this expensive to go skiing? I’ll have to ask my folks, pretty sure they were the ones footing the bill back in the day. But we quickly ruled out the big mountains when we saw that Whiteface is $70+ and Gore is $60+. Tack on ski rentals and lunch and we would be looking at a couple hundred dollars just to spend an afternoon snowplowing down the bunny hill. No thanks.
Some of the smaller, more local, ski areas definitely fit our budgets and skill levels, but didn’t appear to have rentals. So we decided to split the difference and find a mid-sized mountain. Something with several trails, a few lifts, rentals and lift tickets in the sub $40 range. On our list was Titus and Oak. The latter was one of the mountains I first learned to ski on! But the former is a closer drive, so that is where we are heading.
Wish us luck!

Good luck! And yes, I think Gore was always that much money. When you become experts once again, you have to come out and ski some real big boys…smile…
I forget why exactly, but I remember promising myself back in college that I would never go skiing with Paul. I think it had to do with reports from our friends that he is one of those guys who just points his skis downhill and tries to break the sound barrier. Is that still true? If so, then I’m only skiing with you when we come out.
Ah yes – it totally sucks to ski with Paul because he is one of those bastards who just goes downhill – he was advised by a competitive snowboarding friend to do the ski races here so his talent is obvious. But, you can definitely ski with me, I just look at him and say, I’m not skiing off that chairlift come hell or high water, I’ll be in the bar when you’re done. We all have a great time…
Just remember, french fry and pizza pie, french fry and pizza pie.
Hahah. I had the pizza pie down, Stan Darsh woulda been proud. The french fries tripped me up a few times though.
I can’t wait to hear how it went! I couldn’t believe it when I was skiing in Colorado a few weekends ago that the one day lift ticket price was $92!!! Unbelievalbe…
We lived! And it was SO much fun. I hadn’t been on downhill skis in 20 years and I really thought I was in for a frustrating day. But we had a blast. And I only fell once or twice – attempting things I had no business trying after a 20 year hiatus. Of course. Time to save my pennies for a Whiteface season pass next year. I’m hooked!
