GPS outages and drops in accuracy are possible next year
According to the GAO (Government Accountability Office) the Air Force is running into various problems as they try to build, launch and maintain the satellites that make global positioning possible. Some of this is apparently due to a series of industry mergers that delayed work and resulted in the loss of knowledgeable workers. These contractors are now having trouble building satellites within cost and schedule goals.
A full scale, long term outage is unlikely, but if the Air Force is unable to launch these updated units before the old ones begin to fail, the accuracy of the system will decrease. I may just be sharing my ignorance here, but it is hard for me to see how drops in accuracy would affect “consumer GPS” services all that much – unless they are substantial. Will Tom Tom deposit you two doors down from your actual destination?
