Hiking Essentials for Europe
If you are planning a hiking trip in Europe this summer, the toughest decision you’ll probably have to make is which country to hit the trail in. The beauty of Europe is its variety. The continent spans a large area from pine forests in Scandinavia to the beaches of the Mediterranean, to the hill towns of Tuscany. Eastern Europe’s hiking trails are less developed and more primitive, which may suit some, though generally first time hikers head for the UK, France and Switzerland.
Switzerland offers 30,000 mile or well marked and well maintained trails, which are suitable for the novice and experienced hiker. The scenery is spectacular and even in the more remote areas of the Swiss Alps, a town or village is never more than a day or so away. The premium hiking trails are considered between the villages of Meiringen and Grindelwald, which are amongst the Jungfrau region.
The UK delivers 15 National Trails which all vary in difficulty and setting. There is the relatively easy Thames walk situated in and around London and the South-west, and of course the famous and ever-more challenging trails across Pennine Way which is 268 miles long and passes through several scenic National Parks. The beauty of Britain’s small and densely populated country is you are never too far from a pub or guesthouse offering an inexpensive bed and breakfast.
France’s network of walking trails stretches to over 100,000 miles, making it one of the most comprehensive networks in Europe. Long, national paths where you can walk the entire country are complimented by shorter local routes, which offer the opportunity to explore the many quaint French towns and villages.
Wherever you choose, there are hiking essentials that you simply cannot be without. A detailed ordnance survey map is a good essential to start with, along with a compass to help get your bearing in unfamiliar surroundings. Suitable outdoor clothing is vital and helps compliment your experience in addition to keeping you dry/cool/warm. Depending on what time of day/year you are hiking, a torch or headlamp is also an item you cannot afford to be without, along with a first-aid kit, water, and a mobile phone for emergencies.
Happy Hiking this summer!
