I woke up excited to explore the beach in daylight. It was windy and on the cool side, but that did not deter me. I was pleased to see that the Lakeshore Resort exceeded all of my expectations. It is set on a gorgeous property overlooking the lake and the grounds are impeccably maintained. It’s nothing too fancy, but it’s clean and beautiful and relaxed and only a short stroll to a private beach.

The wind was even stronger on the shore and it was too cold for a swim, but it didn’t keep me from enjoying my morning coffee and taking in my first good view of the Great Lakes.

After the beach, we headed to downtown Saugatuck for lunch. We wandered in and out of galleries and garden stores, amazed at the town’s resemblance to Key West. Key West? This is the Midwest! We had a great lunch at Pumpernickels, where we enjoyed live music by a talented guy named Chip Christy. Doesn’t get better than a guy and his guitar. After shopping and wandering some more, we headed back to the hotel to rest before dinner.
We had a great dinner on the patio at Everyday People Cafe in Douglas, the little town just next to Saugatuck. After dinner we picked up a bottle of wine to enjoy back at the hotel in front of a fire overlooking the lake. Perfect.
