Fall is a wonderful time of year. Especially in the mountains.
Temperatures are moderate, bugs are in hiding, the crowds begin to thin out… and the color of those leaves…
Absolutely beautiful.
However, it is when those leaves begin to fall that the real magic of this season hits me.
It is a chance to see things differently, to get a new perspective on the familiar. A favorite trail, a popular view, my backyard… they open up and begin to share details that were hidden all summer long.
Through the bare trees, you begin to see large boulders, ridge lines, bodies of water.
“I had no idea that was there” is something I find myself saying quite often this time of year.
Occasionally you can even catch a view of a well known landmark from a new angle, or from a spot where you didn’t realize it was visible. Sometimes, this can change or clarify your understanding of exactly where you are.
This happened to me just a few weeks ago.
While playing in the yard with the puppies, I looked out at the mountains across from our home and noticed, for the first time since we moved here, the familiar profile of Hurricane Mountain.
These are mountains that I admire just about every day, yet it wasn’t until the view was unobstructed this fall that I could pick out the fire tower that sits atop this summit.
Now, it is the first thing my eyes jump to when I walk out in our yard. A new perspective, and a view of Hurricane Mountain… I won’t complain about that.
