See Kili Our Way: Blind Climbers Summit Kilimanjaro
On June 29th a team of 25 climbers from See Kili Our Way topped out on Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. In doing so they established two new records: largest group of blind climbers to summit the mountain and the youngest blind climber to reach the top, 13 year old Max Ashton.
At 19,340 feet, Mt. Kilimanjaro is the highest peak in Africa; and while it is not a technical climb, low oxygen and frigid temperatures beat back many who try to reach the top. Some estimates have the success rate on Kilimanjaro at less that 40%. Jess and I have been flirting with the idea of undertaking our own Kili Trek (something I hope to write about soon) and the inspirational story of this team’s accomplishments is certainly motivating.
See Kili Our Way raises funds and awareness for programs that serve blind babies and their families. To learn more about the climbers, or to donate to their cause, you can visit their official website here: http://www.seekiliourway.org
