Tips for Winter Cycling
Although bike commuting is no longer a part of our daily routine here at Towns and Trails, Planet Green offers some helpful tips for those who tough it out during the cold winter months.
Among the obvious tips: Dress properly. Believe it or not, this is the one I struggle with the most. I am a chronic under-dresser and I always regret it. So stop thinking, “Oh, these cotton liner gloves will be just fine for my short ride,” and slap on those ski mittens.
However, probably the most important thing to remember in the winter months is to take care of your bike. Between the salt, sand, moisture and cold temperatures, your bike will take a beating. Wipe it down and keep a close eye on your gears and brakes to make sure they remain in good working order.
My favorite tip from the article? Be polite to drivers and pedestrians, but be smug and self-satisfied to co-workers and others who spend more money and probably more time getting to work by car or bus. Ha!
