Towns and Trails, Our 10 Favorite Posts from 2009

We had a lot of fun working on Towns and Trails this past year. Creating content for the site is such a creative outlet for us, and in a lot of ways it helps motivate us to get out and adventure even more.

Here are ten of our favorite posts from 2009:

  1. Replacing the Old Man of the Mountain – revisited with information from the Architect

oldmanpanel4I suppose you could call this article our first “hit”. Award winning architect Frances Treves contacted me after I commented on news reports about his idea to build a monument to New Hampshire’s Old Man of the Mountain. I agreed to do a follow up post, that included additional information and high quality imagery, so that people could get an accurate understanding of his design. When the post was picked up News for Nerds website Slashdot, it drew about 10,000 visitors over the course of a day and saw 69 comments from readers.

  2. Telecommute from the Adirondacks? Yes, Please!

The pieces were not all in place yet, but writing this article clearly helped get the wheels spinning in my head. About 4 months after posting it I had made arrangements to telecommute and we were moving into our new Adirondack home.

  3. Review: Salomon XA Pro 3d Ultra GTX Trail Running Shoes

This was our first gear review and remains the most popular. We get a dozen or so daily visits by people looking for information on these trail runners, so they are clearly a very sought-after item.

  4. Michigan Road Trip: Full Report

michiganbeachgrassTowns and Trails hit the pavement a few times this year, but our most ambitious road trip was definitely the Michigan adventure. A 10 day out and back drive up along the Lake Michigan coast, with a pit stop in Niagara Falls. One of the highlights of the trip, a day spent at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, is something we won’t soon forget.

  5. Our Adirondack Wedding Part 1 and Part 2

In these two posts Jess recaps one of the best weeks of our lives, and tries to provide some tips and ideas for anyone else looking into an Adirondack wedding. I believe there is a Part 3 floating around in draft somewhere.

  6. Afraid of flying, but love to travel?

Flying is one of the most unpleasant things I can think of doing. As someone who enjoys adventure and travel, this is a bit of an issue. In this post I talk about some of the tips and tricks I use to help reduce the anxiety and hassle of getting on a plane.

  7. Old Adirondack Road Reopened in Snowmobile Tug of War

Nothing like a little snowmobile talk to stir up some discussion. It is almost like a tastes great, less filling argument. There just always seem to be those who want to race around wilderness settings in motorized vehicles, and those who want to keep them more… ‘wild’.

  8. A Paddle Along the Mystic

lowermysticlakesunsetSome of the best adventures are the ones that take place in your backyard, and for most of this year the Mystic River was right down the road from us. This post, and a reader’s comment, also prompted me to contact my State Representative about wake issues on the Lower Mystic Lake and River.

  9. Alaskan Vacation

Our first Reader Submission included highlights from an Alaskan vacation. The outstanding photographs had us itching to experience it ourselves.

  10. Our Adirondack Home – Finally Settling In

We did it! We moved to the mountains!

Those were just a few of our favorites. If there was a post this year that you really enjoyed, or if there is content you’d like us to cover more, please let us know. We love hearing from everyone!

It’s been a great 12 months for Towns and Trails and we are excited about the adventures the new year will bring us. You can be sure we’ll be sharing them with you.

Have a great 2010!
