Hiking Is Hard Work

Fire It Up

The first wood stove fire of the year. Does it get better than that?

I can’t believe it took me 30 years to discover the joy of a wood stove. I think growing up in southern California might have had something to do with that, though my California upbringing did help me discover the joy of a beach bonfire.

Fire. I’m noticing a theme. Anyway.

The other day was nearly perfect. It was a clear, autumn day. I took the puppies for a short hike. It was Esther’s first hike ever and she loved it (I think). It’s hard to tell with her because she’s totally laid back. Not like her nutty big sister who thinks hikes are THE BEST THING EVER. Along with sticks and stones and the cat and her dad and car rides… She finds joy in just about everything.

The two of them are a study in contrast. Esther is a chubby little (and by little, I mean BIG) roly-poly puppy. She loves to play, but she also loves to nap. And eat. And poop. Willa, on the other hand, is lean and FAST. She has endless energy and naps with one eye open. She’s not a big eater. In fact, she’s pretty neurotic about her food and we often have to hand-feed her.

There I go, another tangent.

What I’m trying to say is that I love this time of year. The days are perfect for being outside. Cool and clear. And the nights – crisp and chilly – are perfect for snuggling next to the wood stove with two tired puppies.

It truly doesn’t get better than that.
