Utah remains king of the arches

Just in case you were wondering (and I am sure you weren’t) geologists recently settled a thirty year old argument by developing standards on the correct way to….measure a geologic arch. This is big news here in Utah, because the scientists determined that the two longest arches, and six of the top ten are located in the Beehive State.  Not surprisingly, the longest arch is found at Arches National Park while the second longest is found at Zion National Park.  Most importantly, this news puts to rest the rumor that China (gasp!) was home to the world’s greatest arch.  If geologic arches are your thing, the Southwest US is the place for you (although a trip to the Sahara may be a bit more fun!)

Outside of the “big” parks of Zion and Arches, you will find many other superb arches and bridges in Utah (there is a subtle geological difference). For a remote experience, visit the Kolob Arch.
