The Burj Khalifa officially opened in Dubai earlier this month. At 2,717 feet it is now the tallest building in the world… and at a cost of $1.5 billion dollars, I’d say it is also a monument to Dubai’s recent financial problems. But regardless, with such a tempting target now on center stage it didn’t take long for a pair of base jumpers to have a go at it.
Nasir Al Niyadi and Omar Al Hegelan took the plunge last week.
Pretty awesome video. But I wonder what BASE jumping purists are saying about this one. It was clearly an approved and scripted event, almost has a PR feel to it. And they look like they used a crane and platform of some sort to get out and away from the building. Someone consult the BASE jumping rulebook and get back to me.
This isn’t the first time someone has jumped from the Burj. During its construction 2 men, one British and one French, pulled off a jump. It was without permission and sans platform, but wasn’t from as high a height.
